How Does BOTOX® Work?
As you age, the repetitive motions that your facial muscles make contribute to fine lines and wrinkles. Over time the wrinkles can become permanent, and they can be noticeable even if you’re not moving those muscles.
BOTOX® is the brand name for botulinum toxin. It’s a toxin that causes muscle weakness. When injected in very small amounts into your facial muscles, the muscles relax, which reduces the pull they exert on the skin. As a result, wrinkles relax, soften, and can even disappear altogether!
How Long Do the Results of BOTOX Treatment Last?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a temporary treatment, although it does last longer in some people than in others. In general, most people can expect the results of their treatments to last for three to six months.
What’s Involved in Treatment and Recovery?
Having a BOTOX® treatment takes less than 10 minutes. The serum is delivered via injection through a very fine needle, so it causes only a minimal amount of discomfort.
Once your treatment is over, you’ll be able to go about your day as usual, including going back to work. There’s no recovery period, and there are very few restrictions on your activity level. The only restriction is that for the first 24 hours, it’s best to avoid exercise and strenuous activity. This is to reduce the risk of BOTOX® spreading from the injection sites to other parts of the face.
Frown lines plague many men and women and can settle in as early as your 20s. Dysport® is an injectable treatment that addresses these glabellar lines found between your eyebrows without making you appear frozen. Also known as “11’s,” frown lines develop due to repeated muscle contractions. Dysport® smoothens these moderate to severe wrinkles by reducing the movement of specific facial muscles without affecting the overall look of your face.
How Does Dysport Work?
Dysport® is a non-invasive treatment that can minimize frown lines without limiting your ability to make facial expressions. This injectable provides these youthful results because it contains abobotulinumtoxinA. Dysport® is in the same class of injectables as BOTOX® Cosmetic and Xeomin®, which are neuromodulators that contain forms of botulinum toxin. This wrinkle treatment is also used to treat certain neurological conditions that cause muscle spasms.
Most men and women who choose Dysport® to address their frown lines see results within 2-3 days of their injection, with lasting improvement for up to four months. Follow up Dysport® treatments are necessary to maintain your results. In clinical trials, 97 percent of patients said they would do it again for the natural-looking results, and studies also found that over 80 percent of patients had a successful reduction in wrinkle appearance.
The procedure itself involves one injection into five points above and between the eyebrows where glabellar lines form due to repeated muscle activity.
Dysport® works well for adults under the age of 65 and is approved to treat facial lines and neurological concerns in 69 countries, including the United States. However, this injectable should not be used if you’ve had an allergic reaction to a product with botulinum toxins, cow’s milk protein, have a skin infection at the injection site or are otherwise allergic to any ingredients contained in Dysport.
The most common side effects found in clinical trials were a headache, injection site pain or skin reaction, nose and throat irritation, eyelid swelling or drooping, nausea, sinus inflammation, and upper respiratory tract infection.
